Electroscope

Learning objectives

  • To illustrate the action of electric force at a distance (Coulomb's law).
  • To discover the principle of operation of the electroscope.

The sphere in the first tab and the electroscope are made of metal. In a conductor, the electrons can move, but not positive ions. By placing a charged conductor near the sphere, the charge distribution in the sphere is disturbed.

This disturbance occurs without contact for the electrical forces act at a distance. This phenomenon is called "electrostatic induction" or "electrification by induction".
